Duties:
Role Overview: The successful candidate will produce newsletters for project staff, to include researching story ideas, taking photos, editing, layout and obtaining necessary approvals prior to publication. As the primary duty of this position, the editor will be responsible for the publishing and distribution process. The Public Communications Specialist reports to and receives general operations and functional direction from a Communications Manager and/or Senior Communications Specialist. Principal responsibilities: Maintains frequent contact with individuals internal and external to Bechtel at all levels including senior management, division and project management, and client personnel to gather content for publications and to keep abreast of information about the project. Maintains contact with media representatives and client personnel external to Bechtel to respond to requests for information. Coordinates tours of the plant site with the client as well as with plant Systemization and Operations staff, ensuring necessary background checks are performed and Personal Protective Equipment is utilized. Writes news and feature stories for a project publication. Independently researches story ideas, conducts interviews with project staff or with persons external to Bechtel, and coordinates necessary photography in support of the article. Responsible for layout/design of publications and distribution to the workforce and other recipients. Responds to the more sensitive or complex requests for information from internal and external sources on the project’s current activities, historical items, and general background facts. Develops new ideas and angles of interest for Public Communications projects for supervisor review. Interfaces with local charitable organizations or coordinates community stewardship events. Develops layout and design for newspaper ads. Develops and designs collateral materials for environmental public notices. Takes project photos used for progress reports and public outreach efforts.
Experience Required:
Basic Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations or related field. In lieu of formal degree, six years of related experience in print or broadcast journalism, public affairs or public relations is required. Must be a US Citizen. Minimum Qualifications: Thorough knowledge of journalism styles and thorough familiarity with English grammar rule. Proficient skills in editing and proofreading. Knowledge of photographic and visual composition. Knowledge of press release formulation and style. Demonstrated skill in written and oral communications. Demonstrated skill in use of Social Media. Demonstrated skill in graphic design Demonstrated skill in use of Microsoft Office Word, Outlook and PowerPoint software Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of printing processes and reproduction methods. Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite software products including InDesign, Photoshop and Politemail. Must be willing to submit 2-3 writing or graphic design samples upon request
